Eastern Washington gives Earlywine contract extension

03/02/2010 - Cheney, WA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Eastern Washington has given men's basketball coach Kirk Earlywine a contract extension through next season.

Earlywine just completed his third season with the Eagles and has posted a record of 32-58, including 9-21 this season. Eastern Washington finished 5-11 in the Big Sky Conference and failed to earn a spot in the league tournament for a fourth straight season.

"We look forward to our men's basketball program turning the corner next year and again being a part of the Big Sky Tournament," said EWU athletic director Bill Chaves.

Eastern Washington started three freshmen this season and the team lost 10 games by six points or less.

"I am very happy that [EWU President] Dr. [Rodolfo] Arevalo and Bill Chaves have chosen to allow me to continue the rebuilding process of the men's basketball program here at Eastern," said Earlywine. "From day one, I knew that this would be a long and difficult process. However, with the young players who stepped forward this year, along with our redshirts and our incoming recruiting class, I feel that we are very close to turning the corner."

The Eagles were 11-19 in Earlywine's first season and 12-18 in 2008-09.
